Saint Maria Goretti

Today, I'll take you to Italy in the late 19th century to share the life and tragic death of a young girl who became a symbol of purity and forgiveness, Saint Maria Goretti. It's a raw, painful story, but one filled with hope. The story of an 11-year-old girl. Who, even in the most difficult moment of her short life, found the strength to forgive her killer.

But who was Maria Goretti? Maria Goretti was born on October the 16th, 1890, in Corinaldo, a small village in the Marche region of Italy, to a poor family of farmers. Her childhood was marked by poverty and hard work in the fields, but also by a deep faith instilled by her parents. When Maria was just 10 years old, her father died of malaria, leaving the family in even more difficult circumstances. Her mother, Assunta, had to work even harder to support her six children.

Despite all this, Maria was a joyful and devout child. Even at an early age, she took on many responsibilities at home, helping her mother and caring for her siblings. She was a simple, humble girl, but her faith was unshakable. Maria's fate became tragically entwined with that of the Serenelli family, with whom the Goretti family shared a small, rented home. Among the Serenellis was Alessandro. An 18-year-old young man who began harboring dark desires toward little Maria.

On July 5, 1902, Alessandro found a moment when Maria was alone in the house and attempted to assault her. But Maria resisted bravely, shouting that she would rather die than sin. Blinded by rage at her rejection, Alessandro grabbed and awed and stabbed Maria 14 times.

The girl was rushed to the hospital, but her injuries were too severe. She lingered in agony for about 24 hours. And here we come to one of those touching aspects of her story. On her hospital bed, with 14 wounds on her body and burning with fever, Maria forgave Alessandro. She told the priest who had come to administer the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, I forgive him with all my heart, and I want him to be with me in paradise.

Think about that for a moment. Maria, a child who had suffered unspeakable violence, found the strength to forgive the man who had mortally wounded her. Alessandro Serenelli was arrested shortly after the murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison. At first, he was full of hatred and anger, but something changed during his imprisonment. One night, according to tradition, he had a vision in which Maria appeared to him holding lilies, symbols of purity, and handed him the flowers. From that moment, Alessandro deeply repented for his crime.

An interesting anecdote. After being released from prison, Alessandro Serenelli went to Assunta Goretti, Maria's mother, to ask her forgiveness. And do you know what Assunta did? She forgave him. Imagine the power of this gesture, a mother forgiving the man who killed her daughter.

But the story doesn't end there. Maria Goretti not only forgave her attacker in life, but has been credited with countless miracles through her intercession. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII on June 24, 1950, becoming one of the youngest saints ever declared in the history of the Church. During the canonization ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica, among those present was none other than Alessandro Serenelli.
