Saint Oscar Romero

Today, I will take you to the heart of El Salvador, a country devastated by violence and poverty, to tell you the story about a man who dared to challenge power and paid for it with his life. I am talking about Oscar Romero, archbishop, defender of the poor, and victim of an assassination that shook an entire nation.

Oscar Romero. A name you may have heard, but behind it lies a story of courage, faith, and tragedy. His life was a journey of tough decisions and acts of pure defiance that ultimately led him to face a tragic but glorious fate. Romero was born in 1917, in a small village in El Salvador, into a humble family. His father wanted him to become a carpenter, and Oscar indeed had a talent for manual work. It is said that as a child, he would carve small wooden crosses and give them to his friends.

But young Oscar chose a different path, feeling a deeper calling to become a priest. After years of study in the seminary, he was ordained, and later in 1977, appointed Archbishop of San Salvador. At first, Romero was seen as a quiet, conservative man who avoided political matters. But everything changed in an instant, following an event that would forever mark his life, the assassination of Father Rutilio Grande.

Rutilio Grande was a priest and a close friend of Romero, a man who worked tirelessly alongside the poor farmers. One day, while traveling to a village to celebrate mass, he was ambushed and killed by regime hitmen. The news hit Romero like a punch in the stomach.

It said that upon hearing about the murder, Romero rushed to the crime scene and knelt beside his friend's body, praying silently. At that moment, he realized that his mission could no longer be confined to the church's walls. He had to speak up for the poor and the oppressed.

From that day onward, Oscar Romero was no longer the same. Every Sunday, his sermons became bold accusations against the regime. Through the radio, his voice echoed across the country. He spoke about injustice, corruption, and violence, and he did so courageously, naming names.

Death threats soon followed. He was warned that he would be killed if he didn't stop. But Romero did not back down. He continued to celebrate mass, to speak, and to fight for those without a voice. And so... We come to that fateful day, March 24th, 1980, the day Romero was assassinated.

It was a day like any other. Romero went to the Divine Providence Hospital to celebrate Mass in a small chapel. No one could have imagined that in just a few moments, the history of El Salvador would change forever. While celebrating Mass, A gunshot rang out in the chapel, a single shot, precise, fatal. Romero fell, struck in the heart.

His death shocked the nation, but his message did not fade away. Instead, his figure became a symbol for millions of people around the world. Today, Oscar Romero is recognized as a martyr and a saint by the Catholic Church. In 2018, Pope Francis canonized him, honoring the sacrifice he made in the name of the poor and the oppressed. Romero leaves us with a message of hope and courage. Injustice must not be met with silence. His life teaches us that even when challenges seem insurmountable, the power of faith and truth can make a difference.
