August 29 | The Passion of Saint John the Baptist

Welcome, young history buffs and curious minds, to My Daily Saint, the podcast that digs deep into the incredible lives of the saints, those remarkable people who shaped history and continue to inspire us today. Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, we are looking at a man who was absolutely fearless.

Imagine living in the first century. Out in the harsh, scorching desert, a wild figure appears. He isn't wearing fine clothes or living in a royal palace. He's wearing a rough, scratchy camel-skin robe. He isn't some polite, quiet philosopher. No, he's a bold, thunderous voice crying out, preaching a message of repentance to anyone who will listen. His incredible story actually began before he even took his first breath. While he was still in his mother Elizabeth's womb, he miraculously recognized and first proclaimed the coming of Christ.

This is the story of St. John the Baptist, and today we're diving into his incredible life, his powerful legacy, and his tragically dramatic final days. St. John the Baptist spent his entire ministry doing one main thing, living a holy life and pointing the way to the Messiah. If you look at classic paintings or stained-glass windows of him, you'll often see his traditional attributes. He's usually holding a cross, a lamb, a little scallop shell used for pouring water, or a scroll with the Latin words Ece Agnus Dei, which translates to Behold the Lamb of God.

John's dedication to the truth meant he never backed down from calling out wrongdoing. He didn't care how rich or powerful you were. If you were doing wrong, John would tell you. King Herod, the ruler at the time, made a very scandalous and public choice. He decided to live with his own brother's wife, a woman named Herodias.

Most people in the kingdom would just keep their mouth shut. Why risk angering a powerful king who could have you imprisoned? But not John. He boldly and publicly condemned the ruler's actions, fiercely defending the sanctity of marriage. Because of this unbending courage, a furious King Herod had John thrown into a dark, miserable prison.

Sometime later, Herod threw a massive, lavish birthday party for himself. He invited his royal court and all the most important people in the land. According to the Gospel of Saint Mark, during this wild celebration, Herodias' daughter, Salome, performed a dance for the king and his guests. King Herod was so incredibly pleased with her dancing that he made a wildly wrecked He swore to Salome that she could have absolutely anything she wanted, up to half of his entire kingdom.

Salome didn't know what to ask for, so she left the banquet hall to consult her mother, Herodias. Now, Herodias despised John the Baptist. She hated him for calling out her sinful relationship with the king, and she finally saw her perfect chance for revenge.

Following her mother's cruel and wicked advice, Salome marched right back into the party and made a chilling demand. She didn't ask for gold, jewels, or land. She asked for the head of John the Baptist, delivered right then and there on a platter.

King Herod was stunned. He hesitated to agree to this gruesome request. Deep down, he actually feared what John's devoted followers would do if he executed their beloved prophet. But a prideful king rarely goes back on his word. In front of all his wealthy and important guests, Herod knew he couldn't renege on his rash promise without looking weak and foolish.

So, he gave the terrible order. St. John the Baptist was beheaded in his prison cell. Today, the Church continues to honor his ultimate sacrifice on August 29, the memorial of his beheading. St. John the Baptist is also the patron saint of builders, tailors, and printers. He is invoked by those suffering from seizures, and people pray for his intercession when facing adverse, dangerous weather. He is even the beloved patron saint of entire regions and countries around the world, including Puerto Rico, Jordan, and Quebec.

Your challenge for today is this. Practice the bold courage of St. John the Baptist in your own life. When you hear a rumor spreading, when you see someone being bullied at school, in person, or online, or when someone pressures you to do something you know is wrong, don't just stay quiet to fit in. Like John, be the brave voice that speaks the truth. Defend those who need defending. And always point others toward what is good. Thank you for joining us on My Daily Saint.
