Feast of the Holy Trinity

Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, we aren't talking about just one human who lived a holy life. We are zooming all the way out to the very center of everything. We are talking about the ultimate source of all holiness, the very heart of the faith itself.

Today, we are diving into the Most Holy Trinity. The Trinity is the central dogma of all of Christianity, one God in three divine persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is so profound that no single image or piece of art can ever truly capture its mystery, but that hasn't stopped people from trying. Throughout history, artists have used symbols to help us get a tiny glimpse of this reality, like a simple triangle, or three perfectly intertwined circles, or depictions of the Father, Son, and Spirit together.

So, how did celebrating this ultimate mystery become an official thing on our calendars? Even though the truth of the Trinity has always been beating right at the very heart of the Christian faith, the Church instituted a completely distinct liturgical feast day just to give special honor to this mind-bending mystery. It started spreading during the Middle Ages, and then, in the year 1334, Pope John XXII made it a universal celebration for everyone.

If you check your calendar, this epic feast day is celebrated on the Sunday right after Pentecost, and there's a really cool, dramatic reason for that timing. Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit descended like fire. Celebrating the Trinity right after that recalls how the Holy Spirit's descent finally reveals the full action of the Triune God throughout the whole history of salvation. Think of it like a grand cosmic rescue mission. The Father sending the Son, the Son coming down to redeem humanity, and finally, the Spirit arriving to sanctify the Church and make it holy.

The Feast of the Holy Trinity is essentially an invitation for all the faithful to do two things. First, to adore God's inner life of love, and second, to imitate the communion of the three persons in our own relationships of unity and charity. Look at your friend group, your teammates, or your family. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit exist in perfect unity and love. Are you bringing that kind of unity to your relationships? Are you the person who stops the drama, includes the kid who is left out, and acts with true charity?

You can imitate the Trinity by being a force for unity in your own life today. And one more thing. Every single time you make the sign of the cross or recite the creed at church, you are actually professing this exact mystery. You are stepping into that grand story of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
