March 16 | Saint Julian of Antioch

Welcome, young history buffs and curious minds, to My Daily Saint, the podcast that digs deep into the incredible lives of the saints, those remarkable people who shaped history and continue to inspire us today. Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, we are traveling back to the year 305 AD to meet a man who faced a nightmare scenario that sounds like something out of a horror movie, yet he never flinched. His name is Saint Julian of Antioch.

According to the records, Julian was born way back in the year 231 in Anazarbis in Cilicia, which is in modern-day Turkey. His vocation was to the lay life, meaning he wasn't a priest. In fact, history tells us he was likely a senator. He was a guy with power, status, and a reputation to protect. He had a seat at the table. But he lived during the time of Emperor Diocletian. If you know your history, you know that name spells trouble. Diocletian was famous for his brutal persecution of Christians.

Being a Christian senator under Diocletian was like walking a tightrope over a fire. Eventually, Julian was caught. He was arrested and put on trial because of his Christian faith, and the authorities didn't just want to get rid of him, they wanted to break him.

Julian was publicly paraded through the land and tortured daily for an entire year. Let that sink in. A whole year. 365 days. They dragged a respected senator from town to town, humiliating him and hurting him, hoping that if they made him suffer enough, he would just give up and say, Okay, I renounce my faith. Just make it stop. They were testing his resilience, but Julian remained steadfast. He was unbreakable. Despite losing his dignity, his safety, and his physical health, he held on to the one thing they couldn't take, his faith.

The authorities eventually realized they couldn't win, so they decided to execute him. And they didn't just use a sword. They came up with something truly gruesome. St. Julian was executed by being cast into the sea in a bag filled with sand, vipers, and scorpions. It is a terrifying image. Sand to weigh him down, and venomous creatures to ensure he suffered until the very end. It shows just how much the world hated his stubborn refusal to give in. But even in that bag, surrounded by vipers and scorpions, Julian was the victor.

He died a martyr, refusing to trade his soul for his safety. His heroic witness was so powerful that St. John Chrysostom, one of the greatest preachers in history, later preached a homily specifically about Julian's bravery. In your life, there is probably a small daily annoyance or a pressure to fit in that chips away at you. Maybe it's friends using bad language, or people gossiping, or just the temptation to be lazy with your duties. Today, identify one thing you know is right but is hard to stick to because of peer pressure or fear of looking uncool.

Maybe it's praying before lunch in public or defending a kid who is being bullied. Whatever it is, channel your inner Senator Julian. Be steadfast.
