March 19 | Saint Joseph

Welcome, young history buffs and curious minds, to My Daily Saint, the podcast that digs deep into the incredible lives of the saints, those remarkable people who shaped history and continue to inspire us today. Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, we aren't just talking about a saint. We are talking about a mystery. Imagine a movie hero who appears in the biggest blockbuster of all time. He saves the main characters, fights off danger, leads the escape missions, and builds the safe house.

But here is the catch. Throughout the entire series, he never speaks a single line of dialogue. Not one word. He just acts, he protects, he gets the job done. This is the example of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus.

Let's set the scene. Joseph starts his journey as a just man. He's living a normal life, legally betrothed to Mary. Suddenly, he is faced with a mystery that, quite honestly, could have shattered his life. He finds out Mary is expecting a child, and he knows the child isn't his. In the ancient world, he had the legal right to expose her to the law, which could have ended in disaster for her.

Then, God intervenes. Through an angelic dream, the truth is revealed to Joseph. Joseph listened to this, responding immediately, choosing mercy over judgment. He took Mary into his home and assumed full responsibility for a child that was not biologically his own, but who was fully entrusted to him by the Father.

From that moment on, Joseph became the ultimate protector. He had to lead a very pregnant Blessed Mother to Bethlehem for the census. And then, things got dangerous. King Herod wanted the newborn child destroyed. So, the Holy Family fled by night to Egypt. Imagine the adrenaline of that moment. Waking up in the dark, packing whatever you can carry and And rushing out into the desert to protect your family. Eventually, the danger passed. Joseph brought his family back and settled in Nazareth. But the drama didn't end.

It just changed shape. Joseph was a carpenter. He provided a stable, hidden life for Jesus and Mary. This is where Joseph becomes incredibly relatable to us. He wasn't a king or a wealthy merchant. He worked with his hands, and through that normal vocation, Joseph sanctified ordinary labor. As a father, he taught Jesus the law, he taught him how to pray, and he taught him the dignity of work. Just imagine that for a second, Joseph teaching the creator of the universe how to hold a hammer or how to say his prayers.

As a husband, he guarded Mary with reverent love and devotion. Joseph's greatness lies in his total fidelity to God's will, which he lived out quietly and without holding anything back. Because of this incredible life of service, the church has given him some massive titles. He is the patron of the universal church. Why? Because just as he protected Christ's earthly body, he now protects the church, which is the body of Christ. He is also the patron saint of fathers, workers, and families.

Tradition holds that Joseph died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, so he is known as the patron of a happy death. We usually think we need to be loud to make a difference. We think we need to be the team captain, the lead in the play, or the one with the most followers to matter. Joseph proves that wrong. Inspired by his example, you too can sanctify your ordinary labor.

This week, when you are asked to do the dishes, take out the trash, or finish that math assignment you've been dreading, try to do it like Joseph. Do it without complaining.
