March 25 | The Feast of the Annunciation

Welcome, young history buffs and curious minds, to My Daily Saint, the podcast that digs deep into the incredible lives of the saints, those remarkable people who shaped history and continue to inspire us today. Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, we are talking about the saint, the one who changed the timeline of the entire universe from a tiny room in a nowhere town. Today, we are looking at the Blessed Virgin Mary and the moment that changed everything, the Annunciation.

The story of the Annunciation paints an incredible picture. Mary wasn't found by the archangel Gabriel in a crowd or at a party, but alone in her house. Now, here is where the drama really kicks in. In the Bible, when angels show up, people are usually terrified. But this time, Gabriel doesn't just show up. He shows respect. He looks at this young teenager and says, And considers her the greatest object among creatures of God's favor.

And how does Mary react? The text says she was troubled, but not because she was afraid. St. Ambrose wrote that she was used to spiritual things. No, she was troubled because the angel praised her. Think about that. In a world where everyone is desperate for a compliment, Mary was actually suspicious of it. She was smart. She was prudent. She didn't let the compliment go to her head. Gabriel sees her hesitation. He tells her not to be afraid. He lays out the plan.

She is going to be the mother of Jesus, the son of the Most High. Now, Mary has a question. She asks, how shall this be? This wasn't doubt. She believed God could do it, but she had already consecrated her virginity to God by a vow. She wanted to know how she could follow God's new plan while keeping her old promise. Gabriel explains that this is a work of the Holy Spirit. And then, the universe holds its breath.

The world was not to have a Savior till she had given her consent. God didn't force her. He waited for her yes. And then she speaks those famous words. Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to thy word.

Instead of the mountains melting away or the earth shaking in such a momentous moment, God chose this quiet moment of humility. In that split second, the word of God is forever united to humanity. So, what can we take away from this? You might think, well, I'm not going to be visited by an archangel today. Maybe not, but there is a very specific challenge in this story for us. We are often consumed by flattery and vanity. But Mary was silent when commended, and took time to think before she spoke.

Today, someone might give you a compliment. Maybe you get a good grade, maybe you score a goal, or maybe someone just likes your outfit. When that happens, don't let it puff up your ego, and don't fish for more. Like Mary, take a second. Acknowledge the good thing, but remember that true greatness isn't about earthly diadems or popularity. It's about being true to who you are in God's eyes.

And secondly, practice your own fiat, your own yes. Mary called herself a handmaid to be employed by God however he saw fit. Today, when you are asked to do something difficult, help with chores, finish that homework, be kind to that annoying sibling, try to say yes with the same spirit Mary did. Because as we learn from this great moment, A quiet yes from a humble heart is more powerful than all the kings and armies in the world. Thank you for joining us on My Daily Saint.
