Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, imagine you are sitting alone in a dark, cold prison cell. Outside, the world as you know it is being torn apart by violence and division.

You know that when the guards finally march down the hallway and unlock your iron door, it won't be to let you go free. It will be to lead you to your execution, either by facing a firing squad or the hangman's noose.

You haven't committed a crime. You haven't hurt anyone. In fact, you've dedicated your entire life to helping the people around you. But in your severely divided country, just being who you are and practicing your faith is considered treason. What would you do in those final hours? Would you scream at the guards? Would you fight back? Or would you forgive them? This is the story of Saint Cristóbal Magallanes.

Let's set the scene. In the 1920s, a massive conflict broke out in Mexico known as the Cristero War. The government had decided to strictly control and even shut down the Catholic Church. Priests were outlawed, churches were closed, and simply going to Mass became an incredibly dangerous underground activity. Enter Cristobal. He wasn't a soldier wielding a rifle. He was a priest. Despite the massive danger, he kept doing his job in secret. He set up an underground seminary to train new priests, ministered to the poor, and spread a constant message of peace in a country that was completely ripping itself apart.

Cristobal was eventually hunted down and arrested. The authorities sentenced him to be martyred, a terrible fate that many innocent people face during this brutal time by either shooting or hanging. Cristobal's response was nothing short of legendary. Listen to his actual, documented last words from his prison cell. He stood tall and said, I am innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico.

Let those words really sink in for a minute. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death. He forgave the very men taking his life. He was facing immediate death, and his only thought was for the peace of his enemies and his divided country. He offered up his own life, hoping that his sacrifice would somehow bring his broken nation back together. That takes a level of mental and spiritual strength that most superhero movies can't even begin to touch. Because of his incredible bravery, his ultimate sacrifice, and his role as a faithful leader during this intense persecution, Saint Cristóbal Magallanes is recognized today as a patron saint of persecuted Christians and of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara.

So, what does a martyr from the 1920s have to do with your life today? You probably aren't dodging soldiers or running secret underground church operations, but you are dealing with a divided world. You deal with drama, grudges, rumors, and people who treat you totally unfairly. Think of someone who has wronged you recently. Maybe it's a sibling who broke your favorite thing, a friend who talked behind your back, or someone at school who was just plain mean. You might be entirely innocent in the situation, just like Cristobal was.

Instead of holding on to that toxic anger, make a conscious choice to forgive them today. You don't necessarily have to become best friends with them, but in your own heart, say, I forgive you. Let go of the bitterness. Bring a little bit of peace to your own divided world, just like Cristobal prayed for the peace of his divided Mexico. Thank you for joining us on My Daily Saint.
