Pentecost

Welcome, young history buffs and curious minds, to My Daily Saint, the podcast that digs deep into the incredible lives of the saints, those remarkable people who shaped history and continue to inspire us today. Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, imagine you're in hiding. You've locked the doors and closed the windows. You and your friends are terrified because the leader you followed for three years was recently executed. And now you are just sitting in an upper room, waiting, praying, and wondering what comes next.

Suddenly, the walls begin to shake. A sound like a freight train, a strong, driving wind, tears through out of nowhere. But there is no storm outside. Then, something even crazier happens. Tongues of actual fire appear out of thin air and descend, resting right on top of your head and the heads of everyone around you. You'd think you'd be burning, but instead, you feel a surge of electricity, of raw, unstoppable power. You aren't afraid anymore. You burst out into the street, and when you open your mouth to shout, you're speaking languages you never even learned.

We are talking about the one and only St. Peter, and the mind-blowing event known as Pentecost. To really understand St. Peter's big moment, we have to set the scene. The Feast of Pentecost is actually known as the birthday of the Catholic Church. It always happens exactly 50 days after Easter, and marks the big conclusion of the Easter season. According to the Acts of the Apostles in the Bible, 50 days after Jesus rose from the dead, things were pretty tense. Jesus had already ascended into heaven, and before he left, he was already in the He gave his apostles very specific instructions.

Go and wait for the Holy Spirit. So, St. Peter and the other disciples gathered together in that upper room. They weren't alone, either. They were joined by the women who followed Jesus, as well as the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, and his brethren. As they waited, they all devoted themselves to prayer with one accord.

So, they are praying, they are waiting, and then, boom! That strong driving wind completely fills the space, and the tongues of fire descend onto each of the disciples' heads. This is the descent of the Holy Spirit. They are filled with an incredible, explosive energy.

They burst from the upper room and hit the streets. They start preaching the gospel immediately. But here is the wild part. They are speaking in tongues that Everyone in the diverse international crowd can miraculously understand. It was so strange, and the disciples were so wildly enthusiastic, that some people in the crowd started whispering and grew concerned that the disciples might actually be drunk.

This is where St. Peter steps up, his defining moment. Peter addresses the gathering crowd outside and confidently declares that they are not drunk at all. They are filled with the Holy Spirit. Peter, who just weeks before had been so scared that he denied even knowing Jesus, is now standing in front of thousands of people. He preaches the truth of Jesus Christ. Reminding the crowd that Jesus had lived and died right in their midst. He powerfully witnesses to the ultimate fact. Christ had risen from the dead, trampling over death by death, and remitting the sins of the world.

Saint Peter's courage had been entirely strengthened by the Holy Spirit. His preaching was so powerful, so moving, and so full of the Spirit's fire that the crowd was cut to the heart. On that single day, 3,000 people were baptized into the brand-new Catholic Church. From there, the apostles went out to preach the gospel to all the nations and Exactly as Jesus had commanded them. The church we know today is actually a direct fruit and continuation of those very first flames. The Holy Spirit has never abandoned His church and continues to inspire holy and brave people everywhere to preach the truth.

Think about the massive transformation we just talked about. Peter went from hiding in a locked room, completely terrified of what people might think or do to him, to standing out in public, boldly speaking the truth without a single ounce of fear. Your challenge this week is to ask the Holy Spirit for that exact same fire and courage. When you feel fear creeping in, take a deep Remember St. Peter stepping out in front of that massive crowd, and choose to speak the truth with courage.
