The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

We are looking at Jesus Christ, but in a way you might not have pictured him before.

Close your eyes for a second, and imagine a heart. No, not a cute pink Valentine's Day doodle. I mean a real, beating human heart. Now, picture that heart wrapped tightly in a crown of sharp, piercing thorns. Picture a cross standing right on top of it. And if that wasn't dramatic enough, imagine that this heart is literally on fire, glowing. Radiant and aflame with an intense, burning light. This is one of the most powerful and dramatic images in the entire world. This is the sacred heart of Jesus.

Today's feast, celebrated on the Friday right after the Feast of Corpus Christi, celebrates an absolutely mind-blowing fact. The Eternal Son of God, the Creator of the universe, actually took on a real human heart. He didn't just pretend to be human. He had a heart that beat, that broke, and that loved. The Sacred Heart is both the symbol and the actual reality of Christ's love. His heart perfectly expresses three huge things, mercy, sacrifice, and fidelity.

Theologically, the church is making a massive statement with this feast day. The church is saying to us, if you truly want to understand redemption, if you want to know what saving the world actually looks like, look at the heart of Christ. It is his entire inner life, made totally visible, through the cross, through the Eucharist, and through his constant love for us.

Now, let's talk history. This devotion blew up and intensified during the modern period. A huge part of this was thanks to the powerful, private revelations given to a woman named St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. Following St. Margaret Mary's visions, there was a massive pastoral push to create a specific feast day that would anchor the entire church in the absolute truth. Of Christ's merciful love.

But here is the crazy part. This idea is way older than St. Margaret Mary or any single visionary. The core of this devotion comes straight out of Scripture. Jesus himself says to the church, Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. We see his physical heart revealed when the Roman soldier's lance pierced and opened Christ's side on the cross. We see the heart of the Good Shepherd desperately searching for the one lost sheep, and we see it in the Eucharist, which is literally given for you.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart takes all of these amazing realities and rolls them up into one massive, unavoidable truth. God's love is not just vague kindness. It isn't just about being nice or giving someone a polite smile in the hallway. No, God's love is a wounded love. It is a chosen love. It is a persevering love.

Your challenge today is to show persevering love to someone who might be difficult to love. Instead of just giving a vague, passing hello to someone sitting alone at lunch, choose to sit with them. If you get into an argument with your sibling, don't just ignore them. Choose to be meek and humble of heart, apologize, and persevere in loving them, even when it hurts a little.
