April 22 does not carry a universally fixed, major saint in every local calendar. In various places the Catholic Church celebrates on this day the feast of Pope Saint Caius (reigned 283-296,) Pope Saint Soter (reigned c. 166-175,) Saint Epipodius of Lyon (d. 178,) St. Leonides of Alexandria (d. 202,) St. Opportuna of Montreuil (d. 770,) and Blessed Francis of Fabriano (d 1322)
But many Catholic communities, following a practice believed to have been established by the Jesuits, use “open” days like this to highlight Marian themes, especially something tied to family life, hidden fidelity, and the interior “yes” that sustains the Church.
Mary’s exemplary act is not merely giving birth. It is consenting to a vocation she could not control, and then living decades of hidden faithfulness: pregnancy under scandal, flight into exile, poverty, daily labor, the agony of watching a Son misunderstood and rejected, and finally standing at the Cross when the world declared her obedience a failure. Marian holiness is not passive. It is interior strength.
Our Lady, pray for us!
