November 7 - St. Peter Ou
Born: 1768
Died: 1814
Nationality: Chinese
Vocation: Married Layman and Catechist
Canonized: 2000 by Pope St. John Paul II
St. Peter Ou remained faithful to Christ even in the face of persecution and death. A husband and catechist in China, he shared the Gospel with others and ultimately gave his life rather than deny his faith.
Born into a non-Christian family, Peter was known for his sense of justice and compassion for the poor. He was married and managed a large hotel before encountering Christian missionaries and embracing the Catholic faith at the age of 28.
Following his baptism, Peter became a catechist and helped guide others in their newfound faith. When persecution broke out in 1814, he was imprisoned and tortured but continued leading prayers and offering spiritual encouragement to his fellow prisoners.
Refusing to renounce Christ by stepping on a crucifix, Peter was sentenced to death. His final words expressed his hope in eternal life: “Heaven, heaven, my true home! I see my heavenly mother and my guardian angel coming to take me home.”
St. Peter Ou's witness invites us to remain steadfast in our faith, even when following Christ requires sacrifice. His courage encourages us to place our hope in heaven and trust in God's promises through every trial.
St. Peter Ou, pray for us!
