Let's be honest: Few people would call themselves experts in discernment. Whether you're navigating a career change, a big life decision, or the question of who you're meant to marry, discernment has a way of feeling complicated. It's exciting one minute and overwhelming the next. Much like modern dating, it can be messy, unpredictable, and full of twists you never saw coming.

Most of us would rather skip straight to the happy ending: the engagement photos, the wedding day, the certainty that we've found "the one." While it may seem like everyone else is finding love effortlessly, the reality is that most people figure it out one step at a time.

The good news? There's no single path to meeting your future spouse – from in-person meet-cutes to encouraging encounters on dating apps, God writes a better story than we ever could. With Zeale Lifestyle’s comprehensive dating apps guide, you can be informed ahead of taking a new step in your dating life. Let's find out where your future spouse might be waiting.

Are you outgoing and independent? Are you interested in a good time with real world connections?

Yes and yes? Try an in-person event.

I can guarantee the closest city near you has a young adult community. Whether it’s trivia at a bar or libations and Adoration, the likelihood of you meeting someone who shares your faith is highest here. Your local young adult community probably offers an in-person sports event like volleyball (I know quite a few relationships that have started over a set, bump, or spike). Try joining a Group-Me for your area or get connected to surrounding parishes to become involved.

If you’re in Minnesota, I highly recommend Twin Cities Catholic Singles! They put on volunteering events for singles so they can live out their singleness to the fullest, and host intentional and structured speed dating events. I was able to speed date with other young adults in a welcoming environment in two sessions: one with regular, quick seven-minute dates and another with longer 20-minute dates. There was a thorough pre-event questionnaire, vetting process, and solid match-making system that left me feeling that my preferences were heard.

Searching for your future spouse virtually while discerning marriage seriously?

Try SacredSpark.

SacredSpark was started by Emily Wilson, renowned Catholic dating aficionado, speaker, and Youtuber, and now author. Spark+ enables singles to invite friends and family to act as their personal matchmakers. An homage to Wilson’s matchmaking Instagram posts, users receive handpicked, curated matches right in their account with the help of family and friends. Read more about the app here.

Are you a Gen-Zer who enjoys good banter, is curious about dating, and wants a real connection instead of endless scrolling?

Try Candid.

Candid Dating is a Catholic virtual speed dating app.The subscription is $19.99 for all their services, including curated matches, the occasional dating video seminar, and virtual speed dating. I loved this platform for the design, the honest post-date questionnaires, and intentional matching process. You can choose to sign up for speed dating events depending on your age group and schedule. I first found out more about the app at SEEK26. Read more about my intensive review here.

Obsessed with rosary novenas, sharing devotionals, and collecting prayer cards? Don’t want to bother with the mess of modern dating?

Zelie is for you.

Zelie is a brand new Catholic dating app coming onto the market this fall. While the app is currently in the Beta testing phase, I spoke with co-founder Marc Reaume over the phone about his intentions for the app. And yes, it’s named after St. Therese’s mom, Zelie, the patroness of marriage, family life, and parenting! Marc says, “We’re here for you guys, there’s a lot of fatigue [surrounding dating] and it seems hopeless and tiring, but we’re here for you. We want you to meet somebody, pray for them, and start your marriage with God at the center.”

Think of this app as Hallow-meets-matchmaker. It has a traditional bio section like other dating apps, but includes an intensive onboarding. The app includes hyperspecific bio questions like "where do you sit in Adoration?” and “how do you spend your money?”

Zelie offers help in the preparation of getting your spouse to Heaven through sending prayers back and forth. If you do find someone and start a relationship, the app will support you as a prayer resource rather than a tailored, spouse search.

Keep a pocket Catechism on-hand, and want an intentional, slow-burn love?

Try Ave Maria Singles.

Ave Maria Singles’ goal is for the online initial meeting to carry over into real life. Real dates. Real connections. The platform offers a one-time fee rather than a monthly subscription for around $97 which is a definite benefit for some who want to take their time. However, the member pool tends to be smaller than other Catholic dating sites. This means that it can be difficult to figure out which profiles are inactive.

Are you 40 or above and on the lookout?

It’s time to go with a tried and true option: CatholicMatch.

CatholicMatch has been around since 1999 and was one of the first Catholic online dating platforms. I know two people in their forties who met their spouse on the platform, dated long distance, and got married this summer! When you know, you know. CatholicMatch has both a free version and a premium version for around $30 per month.

Hanging in there by a thread and looking for a last-ditch effort?

Try a match-making social media post or Hinge.

I know what you’re thinking when it comes to Hinge; however, I know two people whose future spouses ended up converting in part because of friendships that started with a match on Hinge. Once they started dating, they grew in relationship with both God and one another, ultimately saying their “I do’s.” Sometimes, it really is that shot in the dark that makes the difference.

Some Catholic influencers on Instagram and Facebook create match-making posts where you comment about yourself and reach out to other Catholics seeking marriage across the country. This could also be another option if you want to stick your hat in the ring online.

Need some emotional support and want to find your person in-person

Be set-up by your local church ladies, your parish priest, or a trusted friend.

Sometimes, the easiest way to go on a date is to simply make it known that you’re looking. It’s also a good reminder that these people won’t hesitate to nudge you in the right direction and tell you immediately when someone good comes along. It’s better to wait for the right person than waste precious time and energy with the wrong one.
