Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, imagine that you are a literal child prodigy. Born in 1696 as the oldest of seven children to a highly respected family in Naples, Italy, you've got a lot of pressure on your shoulders. But you don't just meet expectations, you completely shatter them.

You are so gifted with intellectual aptitude that you earn a doctorate degree in civil law. And get this, you do it when you are only 16 years old. By the time you're 19, you have passed the bar exam and are officially practicing as a lawyer.

For eight years, you step into the courtroom, battle it out, and completely crush the competition. You have a flawless record. You have never lost a single case. You are the undefeated champion of the courtroom, an unstoppable legal force. But then, disaster strikes. In the middle of a massive trial, you miss one tiny little detail, a small but incredibly important piece of information. That single oversight causes your entire case to crumble, resulting in your very first loss. Your perfect winning streak? Gone.

Your pride? Crushed. What would you do? Give up? Keep trying to clear your name? Well, today's saint, Saint Alphonsus Liguori, did something that shocked everyone. He quit his glamorous legal profession forever and entered the seminary to study for the priesthood. It was a massive pivot. Just three years after entering the seminary, Alphonsus was ordained. He quickly earned a reputation as a phenomenally gifted preacher and a compassionate, understanding confessor. But listen, his new life wasn't suddenly perfect. Even saints struggle, and Alphonsus fought a quiet battle in his own mind.

He suffered from something called scrupulosity for much of his adult life. Scrupulosity is a form of spiritual anxiety, a type of extreme perfectionism where you constantly worry that you've done something wrong or that you're never quite good enough. For anyone out there dealing with anxiety or even just overthinking, St. Alphonsus totally understands what you're going through. Despite this, in 1732, he founded an entirely new preaching order called the Redemptorists, a religious group that still has active members all over the world today.

In 1762, he was appointed as a bishop in Italy, but he didn't want the job because he was suffering greatly from crippling arthritis. In fact, the pain and stiffness in his neck were so severe that his chin was permanently locked resting on his chest, which is why you'll often see statues or paintings of him posed exactly that way. He was such a brilliant moral theologian and prolific writer that in In 1871, long after he died on August 1, 1787, Pope Pius IX named him a Doctor of the Church.

St. Alphonsus Liguori is the patron saint of moral theologians, confessors, vocations, and the city of Naples. Since he was an undefeated attorney for eight years, he is appropriately the patron saint of lawyers. And because of his incredibly painful physical struggles, he is also the patron saint of those suffering from arthritis.

It's so easy to feel like you have to be absolutely perfect. When you get a bad grade, miss the game-winning shot, or make a silly mistake in front of your friends, it can feel like the absolute end of the world. When that happens, remember Alphonsus. He lost his first-ever court case after an eight-year perfect streak because of one minor mistake. But that failure wasn't the end of his story. It was the push he needed to make it through. This week, give yourself permission to fail.

When you make a mistake, don't beat yourself up or let your inner perfectionist take over. Instead, pause, pivot, and ask God, what can I learn from this? Where are you leading me now? Remember the beautiful words St. Alphonsus wrote about God's eternal devotion.

Oh man, consider carefully that I first loved you. You had not yet appeared in the light of day, nor did the world yet exist, but already I loved you. God doesn't need your perfect winning streak.
