August 6 | The Transfiguration of the Lord

Today, instead of focusing on just one saint, we are talking about a major biblical event that happened during the ministry of Jesus, the transfiguration of the Lord. Imagine you are on a grueling hike. You are climbing up the steep, rocky slopes of Mount Tabor in Israel.

You are completely out of breath. Three of Jesus' closest friends were there, the apostles Peter, James, and John, and leading the way was Jesus himself. They finally reached the spot on the mountain to pray. You'd think it's just going to be a quiet time of reflection, but then, out of nowhere, everything changes.

Right before their very eyes, Jesus' appearance is completely transformed. This isn't just a trick of the light. The source tells us that his face literally shone like the sun. Imagine looking directly at the sun at high noon. That's how bright and radiant Christ became. And his clothes? They didn't just look clean, they became a dazzling, glowing white. It was a light so pure and intense, it was completely divine.

But wait, it gets even crazier. As Peter, James, and John are staring at this blinding divine glory, they realize Jesus isn't alone anymore. Two figures appear right beside him, Moses and Elijah. Now, why these two guys? Well, in the history of the faith, they are massive legends. Moses represents the law, and Elijah represents the prophets. Having them stand next to the radiant Christ was a visual way of showing the entire history of the Old Testament coming together to point right at Jesus.

Legendary prophets appear out of thin air, and then the sky literally speaks to you. So, why did all of this happen? The Transfiguration served a massive purpose as both a revelation and a preparation. First, it confirmed to the apostles, without a shadow of a doubt, Jesus' true divine identity. But second, it was meant to strengthen Peter, James, and John for some really tough times ahead, specifically the coming events of the Passion when Jesus would be arrested and crucified. By showing them this glory, the Transfiguration emphasized the union of Christ's humanity and His divinity, and it gave them a sneak peek, an anticipation of the glory of the coming resurrection.

So, what can we take away from this incredible moment on Mount Tabor? How does a glowing miracle from 2,000 years ago apply to your life today? Remember what the voice from heaven commanded. It said, this is my beloved son. Listen to him. Your challenge for today is exactly that. Find a way to listen. We live in a noisy world. Between your phone, social media, and just the chaos of school, it's rare that we actually stop and listen. Today, find your own Mount Tabor.
