And not in a creepy someone-is-watching-you kind of way, but in the most epic, mind-blowing way possible. Imagine that from the very moment you took your first breath, a powerful, invisible warrior was assigned specifically to you.
This companion doesn't carry a shiny shield or swing a glowing sword where you can see it, but they possess a power and intellect far beyond our universe. They are completely unique, deeply mysterious, and their entire, singular mission is to make sure you safely navigate the battlefield of life.
Today, a lot of people like to rely only on what they can see with their own two eyes. Modern sensibilities... Often dismiss the unseen world entirely. Today, we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. So, what exactly is a guardian angel, and what are they the patron saints of? Well, they aren't human saints, so they don't have traditional patronages like the patron saint of lost items or the patron saint of musicians. Instead, their vocation and state is incredibly personal.
They are the patrons and guardians entrusted to each individual person. That means your guardian angel. Is the patron of you? In the gospel, Christ himself speaks of angels who always behold the face of my Father. The tradition of the church took this scriptural foundation and developed it into a staggering teaching that God doesn't just run the universe from a distance or through general boring laws of physics. Instead, God governs the world through direct, personal, and loving mediation.
Every single person gets their own personal agent of divine providence. The brilliant medieval philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas explained that every human is assigned a completely unique personal guardian angel pulled right from the choir of angels. Their goal? To guide you toward salvation.
If you have a guardian angel, you might wonder why you still fail that math test, or why you still get into arguments with your friends, or why life is sometimes just really hard. Well, the role of your guardian angel is not to eliminate difficulty. They aren't a magic chi code for a perfect life. Instead, they are meant to guide, protect, prompt, and correct you.
And they do this incredibly subtly. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, these angels enlighten the human intellect and stir your imagination. Have you ever had a sudden brilliant idea to help someone out? Or a sudden gut feeling that you shouldn't walk down a certain street? Or a spark of imagination that helps you solve a massive problem? That could very well be your guardian angels stirring your mind. But they will never force you to do anything. The assistance they provide is totally real, but it is never coercive.
They deeply Simply respect your human freedom. Historically, devotion to guardian angels grew really strong back in the medieval period. Monks who lived in quiet monasteries took this unseen world very, very seriously. They knew that the spiritual world was just as real as the physical one. Eventually, the feast of the guardian angels was extended to the entire universal church in the year 1608 by Pope Paul V.
Having a guardian angel does not remove your responsibility for your actions. In fact, it intensifies it. Because you have a powerful spiritual being trying to help you, you have a duty to listen. Today, pause for just one minute in silence. Turn off your phone, close your laptop, and just sit. Ask your guardian angel to stir your imagination or enlighten your intellect about a difficult choice you have to make this week.
Pay attention to those subtle, quiet prompts to do the right thing. Choose to act on that good prompting, knowing that you have a powerful companion walking right beside you. Thank you for joining us on My Daily Saint. We look forward to sharing another incredible story of faith and courage with you tomorrow.
