The U.S. bishops praise a federal scholarship tax credit as a transformative opportunity for children. Beginning January 1, 2027, eligible taxpayers can claim a dollar-for-dollar federal income tax credit for donating to approved scholarship-granting organizations. Those organizations would fund scholarships for eligible K-12 students covering private school tuition, books, supplies, tutoring, special needs services, and other qualifying education expenses. States must opt into the program for children in their state to receive the scholarships. Donors, however, may support eligible scholarship-granting organizations in participating states, regardless of where they live.

Under the proposed rules, each individual could claim up to $1,700 annually on their tax return, with each spouse qualifying for a separate credit, allowing for up to $3,400 on a joint tax return. This new federal tax credit could direct billions of dollars... to Catholic schools. Bishop David O'Connell said the Catholic Church teaches that parents are the first and primary educators of our children, and that parents have the obligation of educating their children in the manner best suited for their development and needs.

The federal scholarship tax credit will create opportunities for families to access much-needed resources to expanding their options for choosing the best tools and learning environment for their children. In other news, a new report found that under the Biden administration, ICE was given more than 3 million visa overstay leads between 2021 and 2024, but they made only 12 arrests. Today is also the Feast of St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who was an apostle for Christ's divine mercy. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 2000 as the first saint for the new millennium.
