Idaho Ballot Heats Up - 9/22/26

Abortion is on the ballot in Idaho, and religion will certainly play a factor. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as Mormons, are urging their members to oppose Proposition 1, a ballot initiative that pro-life advocates say would dismantle the state's protections for unborn children and allow abortion after fetal viability in some circumstances. Church leaders announced their opposition in a letter scheduled for reading in local congregations September 20 and September 27. Just as absentee voting began and about six weeks before the November 3rd election, the letter states that the church opposes this initiative and joins with other like-minded individuals and organizations working against this initiative and encourages our members to voice their opposition in a respectful manner.

Mormons make up about 25% of Idaho's population. Catholics have also made their opposition clear. Bishop Peter Christensen of Boise has called Proposition 1 radically pro-abortion and told Catholics, We must vote no this fall on this ballot initiative. Today is also the feast of St. Thomas of Villanova, a Spanish-Augustinian friar, preacher, aesthetic, and religious writer.
