Divine Providence and Our Homeland

God, in his unfathomable wisdom and loving providence, God has not created us as isolated beings, left to fashion ourselves according to our own designs. From the first moment of our existence, he places each of us within a particular family and a particular nation, so that through these bonds we may be formed in the truth, strengthened in charity, and prepared for the mission he entrusts to us. Our homeland is never a mere accident of geography. It belongs to the divine plan. By which God safeguards us and shapes the culture in which we mature as his sons and daughters.

Patriotism, therefore, is rooted above all in gratitude. Gratitude for the land that has nourished us, for the heritage of faith and virtue we have received, and for the sacrifices of those who have preserved the goods we now enjoy. This gratitude moves us. To labor for the true good of our nation, to defend her from moral decline, and to uphold the order of truth, justice, and charity, without which no society can flourish. In our time, certain ideologies seek to weaken this sacred bond by promoting a vision of humanity detached from history and place, as if man could thrive without the roots God has given him.

Some claim that love of one's homeland hinders peace. Yet the Church teaches us that we cannot love humanity in the abstract by failing to love the community in which God has placed us. Charity begins with the neighbor. God gives us and radiates outward from there. Rightly, ordered patriotism is thus fidelity to divine providence, honoring God by honoring the gifts through which he has formed our hearts and character, by cherishing the homeland and by comparting everything that exists within ourselves. We render thanks to Him who is Lord of all nations.

O sacred heart of Jesus, King of heaven and earth, I place today my nation, the United States of America, into your heart, pierced for love of us. On the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, I acknowledge that true liberty is your gift, and that our lasting homeland is the eternal kingdom of God. Under the mantle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, And through the intercession of her Immaculate Heart, bless my homeland anew, purify her from sin, and guide her leaders in truth, justice, and peace.

So that she may safeguard all human life, respect the integrity of marriage and the family, and honor the practice of religion, reign in my home and in my nation, draw every heart into communion with you, that your truth, love, justice, mercy, and peace may triumph in America and throughout the world.
