Richard of Chichester rose from poverty through intellect, integrity, and trust in God. Orphaned early and cheated out of inheritance, Richard supported himself through studies at Oxford, Paris, and Bologna. He excelled academically but lived with deliberate simplicity, refusing comforts even when available.
As bishop, Richard faced intense political pressure from King Henry III, who attempted to control ecclesial appointments and revenues. Richard resisted firmly—and paid the price. Royal officials confiscated diocesan income, leaving him effectively homeless. For years he lived in borrowed quarters, celebrated Mass wherever permitted, and continued pastoral visitation on foot.
Richard believed reform had to be concrete: clergy formation, sacramental reverence, preaching, and personal example. His famous prayer—asking to know Christ more clearly, love Him more dearly, and follow Him more nearly—was not sentiment but summary.
He died while traveling on pastoral duty, worn out but faithful. His sanctity lay in moral clarity without bitterness.
Saint Richard of Chichester, pray for us!
