September 11 - St. John Gabriel Perboyre

St. John Gabriel Perboyre gave his life completely to Christ, following His call from his native France to serve as a missionary in China, where his faith would ultimately lead him to martyrdom.

Born into a devout Catholic family, John Gabriel discovered his vocation after accompanying his younger brother to the seminary. There, he began to recognize a call of his own and eventually entered the Congregation of the Mission. After becoming a priest, he spent several years helping to form future priests.

Yet John Gabriel also longed to serve as a missionary in China. His younger brother had hoped to do the same but died during the journey there. John Gabriel later received permission to go in his place, arriving in China in 1835 and dedicating himself to learning the language, preaching the Gospel, and serving Catholic communities.

When persecution of Christians intensified, John Gabriel was captured in 1839. He endured imprisonment and torture before being put to death the following year, remaining faithful to Jesus through his final suffering.

Before his death, John Gabriel prayed, “O my Divine Savior, transform me into Yourself.” His life became a beautiful answer to that prayer. From his first response to God’s call to his final witness, he continued placing himself in Christ’s hands. May we also learn to surrender our lives more fully to Jesus and allow Him to make our hearts more like His.
