Welcome, young history buffs and curious minds, to My Daily Saint, the podcast that digs deep into the incredible lives of the saints, those remarkable people who shaped history and continue to inspire us today. Forget dusty old portraits and boring stories. Today, picture this. You are walking down a dark, narrow stone street in ancient Rome. The year is around 100 AD. Above you, the massive shadows of Roman palaces loom. But down here in the alleyways, there is only silence.
You are carrying a secret. If the Roman guards stop you and find out you're a Christian, you could face immense danger, because your community has absolutely no legal status or civil protection under the law. Now, imagine that the leader of your secret community has just died. The position of leader is open. But in ancient Rome, being the leader of the Christians isn't a job that comes with fame, money, or a fancy throne. It comes with a giant target on your back.
To step up and lead means to make yourself completely visible to a hostile power. Today, we are looking at a man who stepped out of the shadows to accept one of the most dangerous jobs in the ancient world. His name is Saint Evaristus, one of the earliest popes of the Roman Church.
We don't know a lot about Evaristus' early life, as the lives of these early popes are only sparsely documented in the historical records. Historians think he was born in the first century, probably in the eastern Mediterranean, or right in the city of Rome itself. But he lived during a time very near the Apostolic Age, which means he carried forward the fragile but real continuity of the Roman Church under The conditions of immense uncertainty and danger.
Evaristus stepped up to lead the church right after St. Anacletus. At this point, Christian life was incredibly precarious. The church had no legal status, and only the earliest forms of institutional structure. Every single day was lived under threat. To survive, the early church needed someone with absolute, unshakable steadiness. And that is exactly who Evaristus was.
Tradition attributes to Evaristus an important role in organizing the Roman Christian communities. He assigned priests to different titles or gathering places. Think of him as the ultimate behind-the-scenes organizer. He made sure that even in a chaotic, hostile city, priests were assigned to care for the community and keep the fragile structure of the growing church together.
Artwork of Evaristus often show him holding a scroll, which represents his work organizing the church, wearing papal vestments, and carrying a martyr's palm. In those days, being the pope meant your authority was inseparable from your vulnerability. By stepping up to lead, he made himself visible to a hostile power. He accepted responsibility in dangerous obscurity so that the early church could not harm him. could survive. And the early church survived because people like Evaristus accepted responsibility when it was dangerous to do so.
Today, your challenge is to be an organizer of peace in your own community. Look around your world, your school, your sports team, your family, or your group of friends. Is there a place where things are chaotic, or where someone needs help staying connected?
Step up. Offer to help coordinate a school group project. Clean up a messy shared space without being asked. Or help organize an activity that brings people together. Do the quiet, steady work behind the scenes. Thank you for joining us on My Daily Saint. We look forward to sharing another incredible story of faith and courage with you tomorrow.
