St. Padre Pio lived with a deep love for Jesus, drawing strength from prayer as he devoted his priesthood to bringing others closer to God.
Born Francesco Forgione to a farming family in Pietrelcina, Italy, Padre Pio felt drawn to religious life from a young age. He entered the Capuchins as a teenager, took the name Pio, and continued preparing for the priesthood despite years of poor health. He was ordained in 1910.
Prayer remained at the center of Padre Pio’s life and ministry. In 1918, he received the stigmata, wounds corresponding to those Christ suffered during the Crucifixion, which remained visible on his body for decades. The extraordinary phenomenon drew widespread attention, but Padre Pio continued devoting himself to his priestly ministry, particularly hearing confessions and guiding people toward God’s mercy.
People traveled great distances to seek Padre Pio’s spiritual guidance, and accounts of other extraordinary events and healings also became associated with him. Yet amid the attention, his life remained centered on Christ, prayer, and the care of souls.
Padre Pio’s witness invites us to make prayer more than something we turn to only when life becomes difficult. Through suffering, uncertainty, and the ordinary demands of each day, we can remain close to Jesus and bring everything before Him with trust.
