I Thought Cowboys Were a Myth. Then I Went to Wyoming.

The American cowboy has reached a mythical status in our culture. Yet, I had never actually met one.

So I traveled to Buffalo, Wyoming, to experience a place where that identity is still very much alive. Along the way, I got fitted for a proper cowboy hat at Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters, learned to saddle and ride with a Wyoming cowboy priest, explored the history of the Old West at the Occidental Hotel, and experienced the Johnson County Fair and Rodeo firsthand.

This is the American West from an outsider’s perspective.

Subscribe to Tom Across America as I travel the country exploring the people, places and traditions that make America what it is.
